The Role of Women
Women are particularly affected by the water crisis. The task of sourcing water for their families to cook, to sanitize, to survive is up to them. They may walk long distances or pay extortionate amounts to bring clean water to their families. The choice is a difficult one, certain death without water or possible death due to illness from dirty water.
Walking long distances and carrying heavy vessels is dangerous for pregnant women but water is crucial to their health and the health of their babies.
Today, women around the world will spend a collective 200 million hours collecting water. In addition to time spent collecting water, millions may also spend significant amounts of time finding a place to go. This makes up an additional 266 million hours of time each day lost because they have no toilet at home. - water.org
Clean water and toilets empower women. When women aren't spending their time resourcing safe water or toilets they can go to school, they can start small businesses that will add to their household income. They can garden and provide food for their families and most importantly, they are longer putting themselves in danger to source water.
