Even if resolutions aren’t your thing, take these five actions for stronger, healthier hair throughout the new year.

Know what you’re working with.

If you’re constantly switching up your hair colour, straightening or perming your hair, you might be masking your hair’s type.

Hair type ranges from Type 1 (straight) to Type 4 (tightly coiled), with subtypes in between.

Knowing your hair type will arm you with information to eliminate frizz and flyaways and cut down on bad hair days. Caring for your hair might mean a total overhaul of your routine, if you’re a different hair type to what you thought.

Observing your texture can mean playing the long game. For curlies, this could take months–especially if you’ve been chronically straightening your curl pattern away. A hands-off approach to your hair, as painful as it may be, is essential to the process.

Don’t say we didn’t warn you: you might have bad hair days for a while. Unmanageable hair, flyawaysfrizz and flat hair might be a side-effect of going au-natural, try a light styling spray to work with the natural texture of your hair, instead of using hot tools to work against it.

Eat your way to great hair.

We’re not here to burst anyone’s bubble, but great hair isn’t built on a foundation of wine, cheese and chocolate. (Jury is out on the last one). A nutritious diet is integral to great hair.

Biotin, also known as Vitamin H, aids in hair and nail growth. It’s found in eggs, seeds, nuts and grains. It’s also in hair products, such as our shampoo for damaged hair.

Our damaged hair mask contains keratin and collagen. In your diet, eat more protein to boost production of keratin – a nail, skin and hair strengthener. Collagen is also an important protein for skin, hair and other parts of the body. Boost it by drinking bone broth.

Try sulphate-free!

Stroll through a shampoo aisle and you’ll see a variety of sulphate-free options everywhere from your favourite drugstore to Sephora. There’s a reason: sulphates are powerful surfactants that can cause irritation when left on the surface for too long.

If you have sensitive skin, dry or curly hair, consider going sulphate-free. TO112 shampoos use alternative surfactants derived from plants; there’s one for every condition!

Shampoo the right way.

Get to know your hair porosity. Porosity will clue you in to many things including if you’ll see product build-up quickly and how often you’ll need to shampoo. Low porosity types will need to shampoo frequently to combat greasiness and product build-up. Medium and high porosity hair can get away with shampooing on fewer occasions.

Discover your porosity with a couple of strands of clean hair. Grab a glass of water, drop them in and observe the glass for a few minutes. If your hair is still at the top, it’s low porosity. If it’s slowly making its way down the glass, it’s normal porosity. High porosity hair will make a quick descent down the glass.
