Bière pour de beaux cheveux:réalité ou fiction?
Would you wash your hair with beer? It seems to be a trend that keeps popping up on our news feed. Catherine Zeta-Jones has been a long standing advocate for using beer as a conditioner to achieve, shiny, luscious locks and her mane is just that; thick, gorgeous, gleaming, and highly voluminous.
The thought of keeping a beer in the shower seems like something straight out of a frat house and we’re in no rush to relive our college days however, this old wives’ tale has got our attention, maybe because St. Patrick’s Day is right around the corner.
Thankfully, Medulla & Co, a Toronto based salon home to many celebrity clientele, tested out the theory that beer is the answer in achieving lustrous locks - so we don’t have to!
It’s true that it's packed with proteins, amino acids, and vitamin B which is why many style magazines claim that a beer rinse will strengthen your hair, make it shinier, add volume and bounce, eliminate dandruff and the list goes on. Beer can lighten your colour as it’s known to be a highlighter but if you already have colour in your hair we highly advise against adding a frothy beverage to your hair care routine. Beer can also damage your cuticle and strip your hair of colour - making for an expensive trip to your salon.
Medulla & Co’s verdict was this: “Overall, I barely noticed a difference in terms of shine and volume. The biggest thing was my hair texture changing to dry and coarse, something I’m not used to and found difficult to manage.”
To us it seems like the variable cons may outweigh the pros. So what’s our verdict? Modern science has come a long way in the past 50+ years when it comes to hair care. The alcohol content of the beer is definitely going to strip your hair of the natural oils it requires to maintain overall health.
Alan J. Bauman, MD, a hair transplant surgeon from Boca Raton, FL says, “Most of the positive reviews I’ve found in my research seem to be from those who work for companies that produce beer shampoo — not a good sign.” Source
In other words, don’t believe the hype. Beer is for drinking, not rinsing. Stick to a product that has been scientifically formulated to help you achieve your ultimate dream hair.
If your end goal is thick, shiny hair. We recommend the TO112 hair mask, formulated with collagen which contains several amino acids that help to build up the keratin already found in hair. Collagen also acts as an antioxidant to fight damage caused by stress, pollution, diet, and other environmental factors. As we age, our hair becomes more susceptible to damage and dryness. The ultra moisturizing aspects of this mask include tamanu oil and argan oil which help to fight frizz, and boost strength, elasticity, and softness while preventing breakage and promoting shine.
Avoid smelling like a frat house and stick to a tried and true method when it comes to your hair, after all your hair is the crown you never take off.
